About Us
In 1990 a small group of enthusiastic gardeners in Biddenham decided that the village needed an organisation which would give them the opportunity to share their love of gardening with like-minded people and provide a forum for increasing their knowledge through talks and demonstrations. It was decided that the Village Hall would provide the ideal space in which to come together and the first meeting of the Biddenham Gardeners’ Association (the BGA) took place there in 1991.
From these modest beginnings, the association grew into the organisation that is now in place. Over the years many different speakers have visited to present a wide range of gardening-related topics. Most talks are accompanied by a presentation whilst some take the form of a practical demonstration. We have also had Gardeners’ Question Time evenings and a theatrical performance about the life and work of an eminent 19th-century plant hunter. All of our speakers have a particular expertise, some are well known nationally and many have been Gold medal winners at RHS shows. Over the years other activities have taken place such as plant sales and exhibitions of members’ spring pots and planters. From time to time members open their gardens to the public to raise money for various charities. The BGA also established and tended a wild flower plot in Deep Spinney for many years. The organisation promotes fellowship and friendship and outings to gardens of historic interest provide happy days out for members. Over the years we have visited many gardens of national importance including Highgrove, RHS Wisley, Beth Chatto’s Garden in Essex and Geoff Hamilton’s garden at Barnsdale.
We currently hold meetings in Biddenham Village Hall on the third Tuesday of each month, except August. Professional speakers are selected to give talks at these meetings, the subject of the talk being appropriate to the time of the year in the gardening calendar. Following the talk members enjoy coffee/tea and cake and a chance to catch up with each other. BGA members pay an annual subscription of £50. Non-members are always welcome for a fee of £7.50 which includes refreshments and a raffle after the speakers presentation. As an affiliated organisation the Association’s members are able to benefit from Royal Horticultural Society membership that provides insurance cover for the Association, a copy of the Society’s magazine and free group entry to RHS gardens.
The address of the venue for meetings is The Village Hall, Nodders Way, Biddenham, MK40 4BJ. The Association is run by a committee of its members who are constantly looking for new ideas and suggestions for future meetings and visits and would be pleased to hear from you.
